IRVINE, CA (May 23, 2011): Today, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) released national Part I crime data for 2010. Part I crimes include murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny-theft, auto theft and arson.

Based on the data released, Irvine continues to have the lowest violent crime rate for cities with more than 100,000 residents.  Additionally, Irvine was lowest for overall Part I crime.

This year’s report reveals a decline in every major category from the previous year (2009) including an 18.3% drop in the rate of violent crime which stands as the lowest violent crime rate in the City’s history!  The information marks a continuation of what is now a seven–year run as America’s safest city.

“Cities’ crime rates tend to grow as the population grows. But not in Irvine,” said Mayor Sukhee Kang. “We are a Top 100 city in terms of population with more than 212,000 residents, yet we remain No. 1. This seven-year accomplishment is truly remarkable. A safe city requires dedication from our Public Safety Department as well as other staff, and from our residents. And, being a safe city is a City Council priority second to none. We are thankful to all involved and very proud.”

“I am truly grateful for the outstanding work done each and every day by the men and women of the Irvine Police Department as well as the unwavering support of our City’s leaders,” said Irvine Chief of Police David Maggard. “Our residents and members of our business community can be very proud of this great news!”

Irvine attributes its long standing success to a combination of dedicated and professional law enforcement personnel, a community that is engaged and caring, and City leadership whose focus on community safety is unparalleled.
