Dave Freedland Sworn In as Deputy Chief of Police

3/25/2009

Veteran police manager Dave Freedland has been sworn in as Deputy Chief of Police to become the Irvine Police Department’s second in command.

As a 31 year veteran of law enforcement, Dave Freedland has worked virtually all corners of the department while ascending the ranks.  Most recently, he was the Police Commander serving the Crossroads area of the community.  Over the years he has contributed to the department in a variety of ways, including commitments as the SWAT Commander, self-defense instructor and internal affairs supervisor.

Dave Freedland’s formal education includes degrees from the University of California, Los Angeles and Pepperdine University.  He is also a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Academy and the Southwest Command College.  His interests include music and martial arts, as he is an accomplished guitarist and holds a fifth degree black-belt in karate.

Irvine Police Chief David Maggard said, “Dave Freedland has been a model for character and service.  He has earned the confidence of the community and department over the years and will continue to serve them as he has in the past.  I look forward to working closely with him as he steps into this key leadership position.”

Dave Freedland’s promotion fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Dave Mihalik earlier this month.
