Volunteer to Help Older Adults in the Irvine Community

8/4/2009

The City of Irvine is seeking individuals interested in enriching the lives of older adults by volunteering to become a Community Helper Assisting Mature Persons in Our Neighborhood (CHAMPION). CHAMPION volunteers work in partnership with each other to provide assistance to Irvine's more isolated seniors through home visitations and phone calls, providing transportation to appointments, assisting with shopping or errands, acquainting them with services and programs available through Irvine Senior Services or simply accompanying them to a social engagement such as lunch.

Qualifications for this unique volunteer opportunity include a desire to assist others, an ability to take a caring non-judgmental approach to situations, a one-year commitment with a willingness to attend monthly follow-up meetings and attendance of a basic training session to review issues of aging, reinforce effective communication skills and to learn how to set limits in a volunteer-helper role.

Volunteer training sessions are held once a week for eight weeks beginning Wednesday, September 16 from 1-2:30 p.m. at the Lakeview Senior Center. For more information or to register, call (949) 724-6915.
