On Saturday May 16, 2011, members of the Irvine Police Department Honor Guard assisted with the opening ceremonies of the Special Olympics at Irvine High School. Lieutenant Mike Hallinan ran the torch onto the field with two Special Olympians to signal the opening of this local event attended by more than 700 Special Olympians.

Sergeant Cathy Scherer and School Resource Officer Mike Frei were also there with the Irvine Police Department Explorers to help coordinate the entrance gates and parking for the crowd.

If you missed Saturday’s event, you can still plan to attend the Southern California Games at California State University, Long Beach on June 11th & 12th.

Want to know how you can get involved?  Cheer on the Irvine Police Department as they run the Special Olympics Torch through the streets of Irvine on June 2nd and volunteer or attend Tip-a-Cop on June 9th.
