Irvine Youth & Seniors to Participate in “Orange County Reads One Book” Program, April 9

3/25/2003

Volunteers from the Irvine Senior Center and Irvine high schools will participate in the book reading and discussion.  A trained discussion leader from the University of California, Irvine will facilitate this event.

The “Orange County Reads One Book” program is a countywide book club, which is the first of its kind in the United States.  The club chose Chinese Cinderella, which was authored by Orange County resident and prominent physician, Adeline Yen Mah.  It tells a poignant story of Dr. Mah’s difficult childhood in China and her triumphs over adversity through education and the love of family.  The book features universal themes of family values, strength of character, the role and impact of money, the values of education and the freedom to be one’s best self.

The goal of The “Orange County Reads One Book” program is to promote literacy and the joy of reading, to build community understanding and cooperation, to improve multi-cultural understanding and to enhance inter-generational dialogue.
