Wall of Recognition
William Woollett Jr.
First City Manager; First Employee 1972-1989
Bill Woollett has a long history of serving in both the public and private sectors. After commanding an infantry company in Korea, Bill served as City Manager in several California cities. He was appointed first Irvine City Manager on March 1, 1972. Bill was a driving force in the design and construction for the Heritage Park Aquatics Complex and participated in its dedication in October of 1978. Bill provided oversight for the 1980 U. S. Swimming Long Course Nationals at Heritage. Bill was the Assistant Venue Manager for the 1984 Olympic swimming events and the pentathlon-swimming event held at Heritage. Bill’s daughter, Sara, was a member of the Irvine Meraqua’s renowned synchronized swimming team based at Heritage and was on the 1982 Intercollegiate Championship Team at the Ohio Sate University. Bill’s son, Will, was a member of the 1982 NCAA Champion Water Polo Team at UCI. Bill became Irvine’s City Manager Emeritus in August 1989. Bill was not yet ready to retire so he joined the Transportation Corridor Agencies as Chief Executive Officer. Bill served in this capacity until January 1999. In 2001 Bill was awarded the Transportation Corridor Agencies’ “Visionary Award” because he understands how to turn a vision into reality. The great thing about Bill is that he does all this with a compassion and commitment to making our community a better place for everyone…and with consideration and respect for everyone he deals with. Bill Woollett Jr. has truly been on of the “good guys” here in Irvine since the beginning over 30 years ago.
