The City of Irvine will host the 6th annual Senior Fitness Expo on Friday, June 27 from 9 a.m.-noon at the Rancho Senior Center. The inaugural meeting of the Ad Hoc State Veterans Cemetery Committee will take place at 2:30 p.m. on June 13. The meeting is open to the public and will be held at the Irvine Civic Center. The Irvine City Council adopted Resolution No. 14-27, supporting the passage of Assembly Bill 1453 to establish a Southern California Veterans Cemetery in Orange County and expressing the City Council's interest in providing land for a State veterans cemetery, with recommendations to be developed by the Ad Hoc Committee. The Irvine 2/11 Marine Adoption Committee will hold its 5th Annual Car Wash Fundraiser on Saturday, October 27th from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Lakeview Senior Center, located at 20 Lake Road in Irvine.
This environmentally-friendly car wash will raise needed funds to support the service men and women of the City's adopted Marine battalion, based in Camp Pendleton. Funds help support the Marines and their families throughout the year and during the holiday season. As part of the Jamboree Road widening project at and near the I-5, a full road closure begins at 11 p.m. August 28 and lasts until 5 a.m. August 29; a second road closure will begin at 11 p.m. August 29 and last until 5 a.m. August 30. The second closure affects southbound Jamboree lanes only from the northbound I-5 on-ramp to the southbound I-5 off-ramp. However, it also includes the southbound I-5 on-ramp, which will be closed during that time period. The project is scheduled for completion in June 2013.  | The Irvine Fine Arts Center will host the 17th annual Studio Arts Festival on Saturday, June 4 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. The Festival will showcase more than 100 local artists and more than 1,000 original works of art spanning across a variety of mediums including ceramics, sculpture, jewelry, painting, photography, textiles and glass.
The Festival will also feature live music, food, art demonstrations, and the "crowd favorite" - ice cream sundaes sold in handmade ceramic collector bowls. Admission and parking are free. Event proceeds benefit special projects and programs sponsored by the Irvine Fine Arts Center.

 | The City of Irvine Animal Care Center is hosting the first-ever Orange County "Humane Kids" essay contest, open to all Orange County students, grades 1-12. Students should submit a 300-word personal statement detailing what actions they have taken to make a positive impact toward animal welfare.
The contest is comprised of two categories, grades 1-6 and grades 7-12. At the conclusion of the contest, one winner from each category will be named one of Orange County's “Humane Kids.” Contest sponsor Boomers! Irvine will also provide each winner with a four-hour play pass for unlimited attractions. Selected runners-up will each receive a round of miniature golf. Contest winners will be announced at the Irvine Animal Care Center’s Super Pet Adoption event on June 11.

Per the Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Prevention Act (SB183), beginning July 1, 2011, all existing single family homes must have carbon monoxide alarms. All other types of residences (apartments, condominiums, hotels, etc.) will need carbon monoxide alarms beginning January 1, 2013. According to the California Air Resources Board, 30 to 40 people die each year from carbon monoxide poisoning. SB183 states that those deaths were avoidable and that the California law will help prevent further deaths and increase awareness.
Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless and toxic gas. Because it is impossible to see, taste or smell the toxic fumes can kill individuals before they are aware it is in their home. At lower levels of exposure, CO causes mild effects that are often mistaken for the flu. These symptoms include headaches, dizziness, disorientation, nausea and fatigue. The effects of CO exposure can vary greatly from person to person depending on age, overall health and the concentration and length of exposure.

The Irvine Child Care Project, a Joint Power Authority between the Irvine Unified School District and the City of Irvine, is requesting proposals from licensed nonprofit child care providers interested in operating a school-age child care program at Alderwood Elementary School beginning July 1, 2011.
The selected provider will operate a program providing child care services for children, from kindergarten through sixth grade, utilizing leased space from the Irvine Child Care Project. The program would serve between 70-100 children.
